Here are some important areas to consider when couples share marriage and business:

Determine if you can work together – Can you work alongside your spouse on a daily basis without arguments? Can you go back smoothly to your husband and wife roles after a day’s work? Going against your better judgment could ruin your marriage and your business.

Be a team player – You must be willing to accept advice and ideas from your spouse. Now you have an equal business partner and his/her decisions are as important as yours. Don’t allow your relationship conflicts to interfere with your business productivity.

Discuss your goals – Find out your differences, workout a common goal, and be willing to do your part. Each of you needs to know clearly what his/her destination is, so you both can “paddle” in the same direction. A husband and wife business could either bring you closer or further apart.

Define each other’s roles – You’ll be more productive and efficient if you evaluate each other’s talents and weaknesses, and then assign tasks accordingly. Roles that don’t require particular skills can be done by either of you, or exchanged as your needs or responsibilities change.

Set times to discuss business issues – You need to have a good and frequent communication to deal with business issues. Don’t talk about family topics during time set aside for your business matters and vice versa. Confront your problems and differences as business problems; don’t turn them into his/her problems.

Share duties equally – In order to avoid arguments and resentments, you both should share the business tasks evenly. Again, you may decide which one of you is going to handle a problem based on your own skills, or take turns if no special skills are required.

A husband and wife business partnership could be either an unhappy or a rewarding experience. It depends on your attitude, thoughtfulness and willingness to compromise. Be positive and think about the things you can achieve together, and if done properly, the benefits could improve your relationship.
